See, I am doing a new thing

See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.” — Isaiah 43:19

There are seasons in life when everything feels uncertain. Progress seems slow, familiar paths change, and we wonder what God is doing. Yet in Isaiah 43:19, God gives His people a powerful reminder: He is always at work, and He is able to bring about something new even in the most unlikely places.

The people of Israel originally heard these words during a difficult time in their history. They had experienced loss, displacement, and hardship. But God reminded them that their story was not over. He was preparing a new path forward for them: one they could not yet fully see.

This promise still speaks to us today.

God often works in ways that are quiet and gradual. Sometimes the “new thing” He is doing does not begin with dramatic changes but with small beginnings: a renewed sense of hope, a restored relationship, a new opportunity to serve, or a deeper hunger for Him. These small beginnings are often the first signs of the streams He is bringing into dry places.

Isaiah’s words also carry a gentle challenge: “Do you not perceive it?” In other words, are we paying attention to what God is doing?

It is possible to focus so much on what has been lost, delayed, or difficult that we miss the new work God is starting. Faith invites us to lift our eyes and trust that God is able to make a way even in situations that appear impossible.

The promise that God makes is very specific. He says He will make a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland. Wilderness represents places of uncertainty and lack of direction. Wasteland represents dryness and exhaustion. Yet God declares that these are exactly the places where He will act.

Throughout Scripture, we see that God specializes in bringing life where none seems possible. He restores what is broken, renews what is weary, and opens doors where none existed before.

Another verse that strengthens this promise is found in Philippians 1:6:

Being confident of this, that He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.

God does not begin something only to abandon it halfway. What He starts, He is faithful to finish. This applies to the work He is doing in our lives, in our communities, and in His church.

As we move forward, Isaiah 43:19 invites us to trust God’s leadership and remain attentive to His work. Even when the path ahead is not fully visible, we can walk forward with confidence knowing that the One who leads us is faithful.

The new thing God is doing may already be beginning: quietly, steadily, and faithfully. The question is whether we will recognize it and walk with Him into what He is unfolding.
