Why Worship?
Worship is a deep commitment, profound respect, and adoration for God. Jesus says in John 4:23-24, “Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.” Worship should not be a matter of behaviors or actions. It is a matter of the heart. It is a matter of submission to God’s love and grace.
The Goal of Worship is;
- Like David, the sole goal of worship is to honor God and get closer to Him. Worship reminds the faithful of God’s good deeds, puts Him at the center and focuses a little less on everyone else.
- To Foster God’s Presence – Through worship, we reach out deeper in our relationship with God. As it is recorded in the Psalms 22:3, God is present where His people gather to praise Him.
- To Demonstrate Our Affection – Worship behaves as an expression of the love that one possesses for God. In Deuteronomy, 6:5 one of the commands we have is ‘to love the Lord your God with all your heart.’
- To Reinforce our Hope – Our hope needs to be reinforced and one of the ways is through worship. Worship reminds us of God’s reality, purposes and His power. Heb. 10:23; “ Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful.”
- To Align with God’s Will – True worship changes us and aligns our hearts with God’s purposes. Romans 12:1 encourages us to offer ourselves as “living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.”
The Benefits of Worship
Worship is not only an offering to God but also a source of transformation and blessing in our lives. When we engage in genuine worship, we experience several benefits:
- Spiritual Renewal and Strength – Worship renews our spirit and strengthens us in our walk with God. Isaiah 40:31 promises that “those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength.”
- Power – Worship shifts our focus from our struggles to His sufficiency, fills us with His power. It’s a source of divine empowerment. 2 Corinthians 12:9, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.”
- Peace and Joy – Worship shifts our focus from problems to God, bringing peace and joy. Philippians 4:6-7 reminds us to present our requests to God with thanksgiving, and He will give us peace.
- Deliverance and Victory – Worship is a powerful weapon against spiritual battles. In 2 Chronicles 20:22, when the Israelites worshiped, God set ambushes against their enemies and gave them victory.
- Deeper Intimacy with God – Worship draws us closer to God. James 4:8 encourages us to “Come near to God, and he will come near to you.”
- A Transformed Heart and Mind – Worship changes us from the inside out, molding us into Christ’s likeness. 2 Corinthians 3:18 speaks of being transformed into His image with ever-increasing glory.
Worship is at the heart of the Christian faith. It is not just an act but a way of life that glorifies God, deepens our relationship with Him, and brings spiritual growth and renewal. As we worship in spirit and truth, we fulfill our ultimate purpose—bringing glory to our Creator and experiencing His presence in powerful ways.
Let us cultivate a heart of worship, not just in church but in our daily lives, offering God the praise and honor He deserves. “Let everything that has breath praise the Lord. Praise the Lord!” (Psalm 150:6)
