Cultures Gathered Under Christ: Reflections from DTA 2025 Cultural Day

Different Cultures, One God

I had the privilege of attending the DTA 2025 Cultural Day, a defining moment in my journey. The event’s theme was; One Spirit, Many Tongues: Birthing Revival across Cultures – Revelation 5:9‘. It challenged my understanding of different cultures, helping me shed misconceptions and embrace new insights. We laughed, learned, and gained wisdom from the diverse communities represented.

The sun was out, perfectly matching the joy of the day. I had looked forward to it ever since receiving the invitation to the Discipleship Training Academy. The main event began in the afternoon, after we had finished setting up and shared a meal.

The main program began in the afternoon with a time of intercession. At DTA, prayer is not merely an activity; it is the atmosphere we breathe. The Director led us in powerful prayer, reminding us that everything we do begins at the feet of Jesus. Soon after, the MCs Christine, fondly known as #Chrico, and Charles Nkurruna took the stage with humour and warmth, inviting us into the rich journey ahead.

The hall burst into life with colour, language, and music as students and guests arrived adorned in attire representing their cultural heritage. For those who may wonder—yes, I too had dressed for the occasion, eager to honour the day’s significance.

Cultures represented spanned far beyond Kenya’s borders. We witnessed presentations from the Malagasy of Madagascar, the Bobo of Mali, and the Luo from South Sudan, alongside Kenyan groups such as the Turkana, Maasai, Kalenjin, Luhya, Agikuyu, Mijikenda, and Akamba. Each community brought with them the fragrance of their cultures through song, dance, proverbs and story telling.  These activities revealed both strengths and struggles within each tradition, all tied back to Scripture.

One highlight was a panel discussion on how Christians can share the gospel through their cultural identity. It was eye-opening to reflect on how God acknowledged tribes and ordered their registration:
“The people registered themselves in their tribes according to their ancestral families.” – Numbers 1:42

What stood out for me most was the pride with which people spoke and showcased their heritage, even those from smaller communities.Their stories carried dignity, depth, and conviction, offering a meaningful exchange of cultural values.

As the day drew to a close, I found myself reflecting on the beauty of cultures gathered under the Lordship of Christ. In that hall, love and unity shone brightly—the raw, honest kind. Even communities that history had set apart found space to laugh together, learn from each other, and speak truth with grace.

As students and guests, we left with full hearts and minds challenged to carry this spirit of fellowship into our daily lives. It was more than an event; it was a prophetic picture of the kingdom of God. A kingdom where every tribe, tongue, and nation stands redeemed, worshipping the Lamb in the fullness of their God-given identity. May we be people who continue to nurture love among all communities, dismantle prejudice with truth, and carry the good news of Christ through the beauty of who we are and where we come from.
